Hometown favourite Christina Proteau held her third-round lead to capture the BC Amateur Women’s Championship at Alberni Golf Club in Port Alberni.

Proteau, 28, who previously won the BC title in 2006 and 2009, carded a final round 4-over-par 75 to finish the tournament at 6-over-par 290 and take the win by one stroke.

“This is a very special win for me since I was born and raised here,” said Proteau, who will be teeing it up at the U.S. Women’s Open beginning July 7. “I felt lots of pressure playing in front of a home crowd but I managed to scape it out.”

The month of July will be a busy one for Proteau who, in addition to playing in the U.S. Women’s Open in Colorado Springs, will be vying for her second national title at the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur at Duncan Meadows Golf Club in Duncan, BC, after winning the event in 2009. She will then travel to Daytona Beach, FL, to attend LPGA Qualifying School where she will attempt to get her tour card.

“I think this week was hard because everyone knows me,” said Proteau, who leaves for the U.S. Women’s Open on Saturday. “Next week no one has any idea who I am so there’s less pressure and I’m just going to go out and enjoy myself.”

Finishing in second place with an overall score of 7-over-par 291 was Amanda Baker, of Nanaimo. The North Carolina State Wolfpack player pushed Proteau all day ensuring the tournament stayed close. In third place was Anica Yoo, of Port Coquitlam, at 8-over-par 292.

The Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship will be held July 18-22, 2011, at Duncan Meadows Golf &CC, in Duncan, BC. Representing BC in the Interprovincial Team Championship will be Proteau, Yoo and Baker.

June 30 – Hometown favourite Christina Proteau carded a final round 3-under par 68 to capture her second BC Mid-Amateur Women’s Championship at Alberni Golf Club, in Port Alberni.

Proteau posted four birdies and an eagle on the day to finish with a tournament total 2-over-par 215 to once again become the Mid-Amateur provincial champion and to vault her in the lead at the BC Amateur Women’s Championship which finishes up on Friday.

“I started off a little slow today but I had a good stretch in the middle and it all came together,” said Proteau, 28, who won the 2009 BC Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships. “I made lots of fun shots today and there’s no reason why I can’t be lower tomorrow.”

For the first time this year, the Mid-Amateur Championship featured a Master-40 division which was won by reigning BC Senior Women’s Champion Jackie Little, of Port Alberni, who finished with a tournament total 16-over-par 225.

Little, who is a five-time BC Amateur Women’s Champion and three-time BC Mid-Amateur Women’s Champion, was surprised earlier in the event when it was announced the trophy for the Mid-Amateur Championship was being renamed the Jackie Little trophy.

“What an honour it is to have a trophy named for me,” said Little, a member of the BC Golf Hall of Fame. “Amateur golf has given me so much and, at 53, I never thought something like this could happen. What an awesome experience!”

Following two shots behind Proteau in second place on the Amateur Women’s leaderboard is Taylor Kim, of Surrey, at 4-over-par 217. Third place is held by Amanda Baker, of Nanaimo, at 5-over par 218 and in fourth is Anica Yoo, of Port Coquitlam, at 6-over-par 219.

June 28 – National Development Team member Taylor Kim shares the second round lead of 1-over-par 143 with Anica Yoo at the BC Amateur Women’s Championship at Alberni Golf Club in Port Alberni, BC.

First round leader Kim, of Surrey, stumbled a bit today carding three bogeys and one birdie to finish with a round of 2-over-par 73.

“I was a little nervous heading into today but I’m really happy with my game right now,” said Kim, 16. “I’m proud of the way I’m playing and tomorrow I’m just going to go out and play my own game.”

Meanwhile Yoo, of Port Coquitlam, counteracted her four bogeys with three birdies for a round of 1-over-par 72.

“My game feels really good right now and I’m confident with the way I’m playing,” said Yoo, 17. “I played well all last week and I’m hoping to stay consistent for the rest of the tournament and not crash when I get to the final round.”

After shooting even-par 71 for the low round of the day, Amanda Baker, of Nanimo, moved into third place with a two round total of 3-over-par 145. In a tie for fourth place at 5-over-par 147 is Jamie Oleksiew, of Surrey, and former two-time BC Amateur Champion Christina Proteau, of Port Alberni.

Proteau, 28, had another consistent day today shooting 3-over-par 74 to maintain her lead in the BC Mid-Amateur Women’s Championship.

“I can’t say I’m not feeling the pressure of playing at my home course,” said Proteau, the 2009 BC and Canadian Mid-Amateur Women’s champion. “I’m not just thinking about the Mid-Amateur but I’m also focusing on the Amateur as well. Tomorrow is moving day and I know I’m on the verge of having a strong round.”

Sitting in second place in the Mid-Amateur Championship is reigning BC Senior Women’s Champion Jackie Little, of Port Alberni, at 10-over-par 152, followed by Shelly Stouffer, of Nanoose Bay, in third place at 16-over-par 158.

The Zone Teams consist of players who are chosen by each zone in advance of the championship and two-person club teams were selected after the first round by taking the two players with the lowest scores from each club with two or more competitors.

Alberni Golf Club set to host top BC talent beginning June 28

June 24 – A strong field of top female amateur golfers from across British Columbia will battle for the 2011 BC Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur titles from June 28 – July 1 at the Alberni Golf Club in Port Alberni, BC.

Conducted by British Columbia Golf, the Amateur Women’s Championship will feature 64 outstanding golfers looking to become the next provincial champion.

Among those competing in the Women’s Amateur is college standout Lauren Taylor, of Nelson, BC, who won two NCAA Division I titles this season and was named Big Sky Freshman of the Year as a member of the Portland State Vikings.

Also in the field is last year’s third place finisher Soo-Bin Kim, of Port Coquitlam, BC, as well as National Development Team members Leilanie Kim and Taylor Kim, both of Surrey, BC.

The event will also feature a Mid-Amateur competition and, new for 2011, a Master-40 competition. Competing for the Mid-Amateur title is last year’s runner-up and hometown favorite Christina Proteau, who was the 2009 BC Amateur, BC Mid-Amateur and Canadian Mid-Amateur Women’s Champion, as well as the 2006 BC Amateur Women’s Champion. Another player to watch will be Shelley Stouffer, of Nanoose Bay, BC, who is returning to amateur competition this season after playing professionally.

The BC Amateur Women’s Championship is a 72-hole stroke play competition with a cut to the low 40 and ties after 36 holes. The Mid-Amateur Championship title will go to the best player over 25 years of age while the Master-40 competition is open to players over 40 years of age. Both the Mid-Amateur and Master-40 are gross stroke play competitions played over 54-holes with no cut.

Zone and Club Team competitions are held concurrently with the first and second round of the Championship. The Zone Teams consist of players who are chosen by each zone prior to the Women’s Amateur and the gross and net competitions use the combined 36-hole gross and net scores for each team member. The Club Teams are selected after the first round of play by taking the two players with the lowest gross score from each club and the two players with the lowest net score from each club.

The BC Amateur Women’s Championship is the oldest women’s amateur championship in North America, dating back to 1895 at the Victoria Golf Club.
