Justin Shin Claws Back to Capture 51st Northeast Amateur Invitational
June 25, 2012
Justin Shin of Pitt Meadows, rallied from three shots down with three to play to overtake Jordan Russell of College Station, Texas in extra holes and win the 51st Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett Country Club.
Shin, a soon-to-be senior at New Mexico State University, birdied the final hole to tie Russell at seven-under par. Russell had led the tournament’s first three rounds and owned a five stroke lead through 10 holes.
In a three-hole aggregate playoff, Shin made a great approach shot on the first hole and sank a three-foot birdie putt. He parred the second and third playoff holes to win the playoff by three strokes.
Shin, who tied for 5th at the 2011 BC Amateur Championship, shot 68-71-65-65 (269. -7) to reach the playoff. The -4, 65 was the lowest in the field for the week.
Shin is considered a favourite for the 2012 BC Amateur Championship to be held at Swan-e-set Bay Resort in his hometown Pitt Meadows, July 24-27th.
