Yoo Captures British Columbia Junior Girls’ Championship
Team Canada duel ends with Yoo champion ahead of Kim; Kong and Kapchinsky finish T3
Osoyoos, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-Anica Yoo overcame her Team Canada Development Squad partner Taylor Kim to claim the 2012 British Columbia Junior Girls’ Championship at the Osoyoos Golf and Country Club.

After posting a new women’s course record during third round action, the eighteen year old Port Coquitlam resident Yoo proved it was not a fluke by following it up with a four-under-par 68 final round.

After sea-sawing birdies and bogeys on her first six holes, Yoo turned up the temperature on her round, carding four birdies in a five hole stretch starting on the 8th to get her round to -4, -11 overall.

“I struggled a bit in the beginning of today’s round,” stated Yoo. “I was able to make birdie then bogey, birdie then bogey. It wasn’t until the eight hole that I got my round going.”

Not only did she birdie four out of five holes, she did so on all par 4′s, including the third most difficult hole on the day in the par 4, 350-yard 9th.

She wouldn’t need any more on the day, closing her round with five straight pars en route to a 277 total (74-70-65-68-277).

Playing in the same group and starting the day tied wit Yoo was her teammate and friend Taylor Kim. The seventeen year old from Surrey was actually ahead of Yoo by one stroke during the final round after stringing together back-to-back birdies on the 5th and 6th holes before Yoo went on her four-hole tear.

After making bogey on the 9th hole, resulting in a two-shot swing, Kim couldn’t get off her par rhythm, making six straight pars up until the par 5, 16th hole where she would make birdie. This would close the gap to two-strokes with Yoo but Kim would stumble on the way in, making two straight bogeys to finish her round even-par 72 and claim second all by herself, an eventual four-strokes behind the champion Yoo (66-74-69-72-281).

When asked about her plan going into the round tied with her teammate, Yoo revealed something no one would have guessed, her nerves.

“I was actually really nervous and scared. My coach phoned and wished me a good round and said if I played to my targets, hit my yardages and stayed committed I would have a good round,” mentioned Yoo. “I guess he was right.”

“I have wanted this so bad since I was 13 years old,” stated Yoo. “I have won the Bantam and Juvenile but never won the Junior. To do this in my last year is amazing. This feels amazing.”

Yoo claimed the 2006 B.C. Bantam Championship and the 2010 Juvenile Championship.

With Team Canada Development Squad members taking the first two spots in the Championship, a playoff was needed to determine who would finish in sole third for purposes of naming a Team BC subsidy recipient.

After posting an even-par round of 72 (77-76-71-72-296), Fifteen year old Alix Kong of West Vancouver warranted a spot in the sudden-death playoff. The other competitor would be seventeen year old Madison Kapchinsky of Kelowna who finished her final round with a two-over-par 74 (73-72-77-74-296), tied in third with Kong. Both players would finish the Championship with an overall score of +8.

The sudden-death playoff would only one hole, with Kong making birdie and stamping her ticket to nationals by way of the British Columbia Golf subsidy. Typically, the top three performers at the B.C. Junior Girls’ represent British Columbia on Team BC but it was announced prior to the event that amateur-standout Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam would be exempt from qualifying due to a Team Canada scheduling conflict.

Team BC, consisting of Yoo, Kim and Keel, will now travel to Calgary, Alberta to the River Spirit Golf Club on July 31- August 3, 2012 to go up against the best and brightest in Canadian junior girls’ golf.

Asked of her excitement heading into nationals, champion Yoo could barely contain herself.

“This is going to be the biggest competition ever. British Columbia will definitely be the favourite.”

Round Two Recap

Taylor Kim’s Lead Shrinks to Four Going Into Third Round

Osoyoos, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)—Team Canada’s Taylor Kim of Surrey gives two strokes back to the field but still leads the British Columbia Junior Girls’ Championship by four strokes after round two at Osoyoos Golf and Country Club in Osoyoos.

After firing an opening round course record six-under 66, Kim, 17, stumbled slightly on day two, giving two strokes back to her hungry competitors thanks to a two-over-par 74, bringing her two-round total to 140 (66-74-140). The Zone 3 player carded three birdies on day two but unfortunately offset those with two double bogeys and another two bogeys to sit at four-under for the Championship.

Making a move and bringing the gap to within four strokes was her Team Canada Development Squad teammate Anica Yoo of Port Coquitlam who sits alone in second. Yoo, 18, started the day eight strokes back of Kim but got herself right back in the Championship by registering the score-of-the-day at two-under-par 70, level par 144 total (74-70-144).

Yoo’s round started with a birdie on the par 5, 431-yard first hole followed by a birdie on the 4th and the day’s lone eagle on the par 5, 452-yard 5th. She would remain at four-under for her round by carding two more birdies and bogeys only to make two late bogeys and close her round four back.

Sitting in solo third is Kelowna’s Madison Kapchinsky who started the day five back and remains that way heading into third round play. Kapchinsky, 17, opened her round in blazing fashion, jumping out to seven-under-par through her first 10 holes, only to give them all back on her remaining eight holes and shoot even par 72. Her two-round one-over-par 145 total (73-72-145) keeps her in Kim’s rearview mirror, fully capable of making a charge for the lead tomorrow as was showcased by today’s incredible start.

The only other competitor able to break par during the second round was Vernon’s Mackenzie Barrie. The 16-year-old Vernon Golf and Country Club member closed her second round with a one-under-par 71 to sit in a tie for 13th with two others at a +10, 154 total (83-71-153).

The zone net competition mirrors the gross competition with the title going to Kapchinsky and Barrie of Zone 2 over Kruse and Wong but only by a two-stroke margin. The team from Zone 2 finished at -15, 273 net total.

Osoyoos Golf and Country Club Will Be A Demanding Test for British Columbia’s Best Junior Girl Golfers

Richmond, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)-British Columbia’s most talented junior-aged female golfers are ready to challenge the Osoyoos Golf and Country Club in Osoyoos with the hopes of capturing the BC Golf Junior Girls’ Championship from July 10-13, 2012.

Hosted by the Osoyoos G&CC, the Junior Girls’ Championship features female golfers, ages 18 and younger, who are poised to navigate the mountainous and desert terrain of the ‘Park Meadows’ course (Par 72, 5,873 yards) in the quest to join the rank of those who have hoisted the S.C. Sweeny Trophy as champions, including Dawn Coe (1978 & 1979), A.J. Eathorne (1993-1995) and Sue Kim (2005 & 2008).

The 2010 and 2011 champion Jennifer Yang of Coquitlam will not be defending her titles, paving the way for a fresh face to seize the title and with it, the accolades of being the best female junior golfer in the province. Also unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict with Team Canada is Coquitlam’s Jisoo Keel.

Favourites to crack the winner’s circle are Team Canada Development Squad members Taylor Kim of Surrey and Anica Yoo of Port Coquitlam. Yoo had a steady 2011 Championship, finishing 6th and Kim did her one better, finishing alone in 5th. On the national stage, Yoo went on to finish T2nd at the 2011 Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls’ Championship.

The 2011 British Columbia Juvenile Girls’ champion Alix Kong of West Vancouver is also a force to be reckoned with heading into Osoyoos. Coming off representing British Columbia at the North Pacific Junior Girls’ Team Matches in Blaine, WA, Kong will hope to be up-to-the-task of putting together four great rounds and challenging for the lead.

Other players to watch climbing the leaderboard are 2012 USGA Girls’ Junior qualifier Naomi Ko of Victoria, Kelowna’s Madison Kapchinsky, Maple Ridge’s Keanna Mason and 2011-2012 UBC Thunderbird freshman Stephanie Wong of Richmond.

The Championship is a 72-hole stroke play competition with a cut after 54-holes to the low 35-players and ties. Also incorporated into the competition is a 54-hole net competition with awards being given to 1st and 2nd place following the end of round three.

The zone team competition is held concurrently with the first and second rounds of the Championship. The zone team gross and net competitions use the combined 36-hole gross and net scores for each zone team member. The zone team consists of players who are chosen by each zone in advance of the provincial championship.

The top two finishers at the 2012 B.C. Junior Girls’ Championship will be granted spots on Team BC. The team will be traveling to compete at the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls’ Championship at River Spirit Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta on July 31-August 3.

Due to the aforementioned scheduling conflict, Team Canada member Jisoo Keel has been awarded a position on Team BC prior to the Championship. The individual who places 3rd (traditionally an automatic Team BC qualifier) will receive monetary compensation equal to that of a Team BC member to attend nationals.

Any ties for the 2 team positions and one subsidized position will be decided by a sudden-death playoff immediately following play.

Spectators are welcome to attend the Championship and entrance into the venue is free of charge.
