MACKENZIE HUGHES WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE CANADIAN MEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

- Team Canada National Squad member earns exemption into 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship and 2013 RBC Canadian Open;

2011 BC Amateur Champion David Rose Low British Columbian at Championship-

Cumberland, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., carded a final round even-par 72  to capture the 108th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at Camelot Golf and Country Club in Cumberland, Ont.

Hughes, a member of Team Canada’s National Squad, finished at 12-under par 276 for the championship, besting Brian Churchill-Smith of Oakville, Ont. and Chris Hemmerich of Kitchener, Ont. by one stroke. Churchill-Smith and Hemmerich both posted a four-day tally of 11-under par 277 to finish T2.

“Today was totally not what I had in mind. It was a struggle all day really,” said Hughes. “I didn’t feel like I was swinging that well, but basically all I was doing all day was trying to draw on the experience from last year and save a shot or two that way. I felt like it definitely paid off in the end. Coming down the last few holes, I knew it was something I’d done.”

With the victory, Hughes became the first competitor to capture back-to-back Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship titles since Cam Burke of Kitchener, Ont. accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009.

After struggling to start the day with a double-bogey on No. 3, a bogey on No. 4 and another bogey on No. 8, Hughes rallied by shooting 2-under par on his last 10 holes to secure the win.

“It was a day when I brought my ‘C’ game. There was never a point where I was feeling too comfortable,” said Hughes. “I was actually behind for most of the front-nine, and a couple of shots just swung the momentum for me and it managed to be enough.”

During Friday’s final round, Hughes’ group, which included Hemmerich and Conners, incurred a slow play penalty predicated on two separate incidents that occurred during the round. Upon review, no penalty was assessed to any of the three players in the group and Hughes was officially crowned champion.

With the victory, Hughes earned exemptions into the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at the historic Glen Abbey Golf Club as well as the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.

Former Team Canada member Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont. placed fourth at 9-under par 279, while Team Canada National Squad member and 2010 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship winner Albin Choi of Toronto, Stephane Dubois of Brantford, Ont. and Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont. were T5 at 7-under par 281.

The 2012 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at Camelot Golf and Country Club and Club de golf Outaouais featured 240 players with a cut after 36 holes to the low 70 scores and ties. Club de golf Outaouais joined Camelot Golf and Country Club in hosting the opening two rounds of the championship with the final two weekend rounds being contested at Camelot.

The 2013 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship will take place at Royal Colwood Golf Club and Gorge Vale Golf Course in Victoria, B.C.  The 109th playing of the championship will once again feature an expanded field of 240 competitors.

Round Three Recap

MACKENZIE HUGHES LEADS HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND OF CANADIAN MEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

- Chris Hemmerich trails by one, Corey Conners three shots off the lead;

 Kevin Kwon Low British Columbian

Cumberland, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont. sits atop the leaderboard at 12-under par 204 through 54 holes at the 108th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at Camelot Golf and Country Club in Cumberland, Ont.

Hughes, the defending Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship titleholder and a member of Team Canada’s National Squad, carded a competitive course record third-round score of 7-under par 65 to take a single-stroke advantage over Chris Hemmerich of Kitchener, Ont. into Friday’s final round. Hemmerich is in sole possession of second place at 11-under par 205.

“Today was a much different day than yesterday [Wednesday],” said Hughes, who posted a bogey-free round on Thursday that included seven birdies, three of which came on his last five holes of the day. “I actually played better yesterday, but today things just went a little bit better. I got up and down a couple of more times when I missed the greens, and had that bonus there on the last hole [No. 18] chipping in when I was just trying to make par. It was a nice way to finish.”

Hughes, a recent graduate of Kent State University, will look to draw upon last year’s Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship experience at Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg as he looks to defend his title.

“It’s nice to know that you’ve done it and that you can do it, so I kind of was drawing on that today,” said Hughes. “Also, with the type of golf course this is, it’s yielding low scores, so I knew I’d have to go out and shoot a low score just to get back into contention. I plan to do the same thing tomorrow that I was doing today.”

Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont. sits third at 9-under par 207, three shots off the lead, while Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont. is fourth at 8-under par 208, four shots back of Hughes. Oakville, Ont.’s Brian Churchill-Smith rounds out the top-five at 7-under par 209, five strokes back.

Six players currently sit T6, seven strokes off the lead at 5-under par 211, including Team Canada Development Squad member Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows, B.C., Alexis Gemme Piacente of Montreal, and James White of Acworth, Ga.

Toronto’s Albin Choi, who captured the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship title in 2010, is T15 with a three-day tally of 3-under par 213. Choi, a member of Team Canada’s National Squad, posted a round of 1-under par 71 on Thursday.

Third-round action commenced at 10 a.m. (EST) on Thursday at Camelot Golf and Country Club as several groups of players at both Camelot and Club de golf Outaouais in Rockland, Ont. completed their respective second rounds earlier in the morning. Play was suspended at both courses on Wednesday night due to darkness.

Following the completion of second-round play, the field was reduced to the low 70 scores and ties. It took a score of 3-over par 147 to make the cut, with 70 players qualifying for third and fourth round play at Camelot.

The winner of Canada’s oldest national golf championship will earn exemptions into both the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at the historic Glen Abbey Golf Club as well as the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo. Additionally, the winner is eligible to receive exemptions into the U.S. Amateur Public Links, U.S. Junior Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur & USGA Senior Amateur Championship, if applicable.

The 2012 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship resumes tomorrow, Friday, August 10, 2012, with final-round play beginning at 7:30 a.m. (EST) at Camelot Golf and Country Club.

Round Two Recap

STEPHANE DUBOIS HOLDS SECOND-ROUND LEAD AT CANADIAN MEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

- Team Ontario wins Willingdon Cup title;

Play suspended due to darkness at 8:26 p.m. (EST); Thirty-six players to complete second-round play Thursday morning -

Cumberland, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Pending the completion of second-round play Thursday, Stephane Dubois of Brantford, Ont. sits atop the leaderboard at the 108th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship after posting a score of 6-under par 66 at Camelot Golf and Country Club in Cumberland, Ont. on Wednesday.

Play was suspended due to darkness at both Camelot Golf and Country Club and Club de golf Outaouais at 8:26 p.m. (EST). Inclement weather earlier in the day caused play to be suspended for just over three hours, before play resumed at 7:15 p.m. (EST). A total of 36 players were unable to complete their second rounds, and will resume play in position at Camelot Golf and Country Club and Club de golf Outaouais at 7 a.m. (EST) on Thursday morning. Third-round play will begin at approximately 10 a.m. (EST) at Camelot Golf and Country Club.

Dubois, a junior at Lamar University, posted seven birdies on the day, five of which came on his back-nine to sit at 10-under par 134 for the championship. The 20-year-old birdied No. 4, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7 down the stretch, before capping his day with a birdie on No. 9. As it stands, Dubois will take a three-stroke lead over Blair Hamilton of Burlington, Ont., a member of Team Canada’s Development Squad, into third round action on Thursday. Hamilton sits second at 7-under par 137 after carding a round of 6-under par 66 at Camelot.

“I had a good round yesterday [Tuesday], and I didn’t want to get ahead of myself too quickly,” said Dubois, who has already secured a berth in the 2012 U.S. Amateur in Colorado. “I knew some good scores were posted out here yesterday [at Camelot] and my game plan the whole week has been ‘attack.’ I’ve been too defensive in the past, and I want to give myself a chance.”

Heading into third and fourth round play at Camelot, Dubois stressed the importance of adhering to a straightforward strategy.

“My strategy is to continue to hit a lot of fairways and greens, and give myself a lot of chances,” said Dubois. “That’s when the good stuff happens.”

Six players sit T3 at 6-under par 138, including former Team Canada member Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., Alex Carrigan of Guelph, Ont. and Taylor Pendrith of Richmond Hill, Ont.

Defending Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship titleholder Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., a member of Team Canada’s National Squad, is T9 at 5-under par 139 after posting a second-round score of 5-under par 67.

Toronto’s Albin Choi, who captured the 2010 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship and is the reigning Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship titleholder, is T16 at 2-under par 142 after shooting even-par 72 on Wednesday.

Following the completion of second-round play on Thursday at Camelot Golf and Country Club and Club de golf Outaouais, the field will be reduced to the low 70 scores and ties with the remainder of the competition to be conducted at Camelot Golf and Country Club.

Ontario wins Willingdon Cup; Team BC finishes second

Team Ontario, comprised of Choi, Hughes and Conners, carded a two-day tally of 13-under par 275 over 36 holes at Camelot Golf and Country Club and Club de golf Outaouais to win the Willingdon Cup Inter-Provincial Team title for a second consecutive year.

“It’s very nice and I was liking our chances at the beginning of the week,” said Hughes. “It was nice that we could hold on to the Willingdon Cup. It’s always nice for Ontario to win provincial competitions, so the win was great.”

The Ontario contingent bested Team British Columbia, comprised of Team Canada Development Squad member Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows, B.C., Team Canada National Squad member Charlie Hughes of Burnaby, B.C., and Brian Jung of Pitt Meadows, B.C., by eleven strokes to earn the province’s 31st Willingdon Cup title. Team British Columbia carded a two-day tally of 2-under par 286.

The Team Quebec squad of Nicolas Fortin of Quebec City, Sonny Michaud of Rouyn-Noranda, Que., and Charles Côté of Thetford Mines, Que., placed third at 1-under par 287, while Team Alberta, comprised of Team Canada Development Squad member Riley Fleming of Airdrie, Alta., Jordan Irwin of Calgary and Craig Gibson of Brooks, Alta., placed fourth at 1-over par 289.

The Willingdon Cup competition featured three-member teams competing in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play. The lowest two scores from rounds one and two counted towards the overall team total.

Starting times, post-round results, a full field list and live scoring for the 2012 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship are available here.

Round One Recap

ALEX CARRIGAN HOLDS OPENING-ROUND LEAD AT CANADIAN MEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Team Alberta and Team Ontario sit tied heading into final round of Willingdon Cup competition;

Play suspended for the day at Camelot at 8 p.m. (EST); Six players to complete opening-round play Wednesday morning

Cumberland, Ont. (Golf Canada) – Pending the completion of first-round play on Wednesday morning, Alex Carrigan of Guelph, Ont. holds the opening-round lead at the 108th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship after posting a score of 6-under par 66 at Camelot Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.

First-round action was suspended at Camelot on two occasions on Tuesday before play was called for the day at 8 p.m. (EST). Six players were unable to complete their opening rounds, and will resume play in position at Camelot beginning at 7:00 a.m. (EST) Wednesday morning.

Carrigan, a product of the University of Charleston, started his day on Camelot’s back-nine, posting a score of 5-under par 31 before making the turn.

“I couldn’t ask for a better start,” said Carrigan, who tallied seven birdies on the day to hold a single-stroke advantage over Brian Churchill-Smith of Oakville, Ont. heading into second round play. “I started 3-under par through 4 holes, which threw me for a loop starting that good. It was just a really good start and I had a lot of good yardages out there, so it made decisions a lot easier.”

Carrigan, who placed T23 at the 2012 Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship, noted he felt comfortable with Camelot’s layout, citing several similarities to Guelph’s Cutten Fields, his home course.

“The greens were absolutely phenomenal, speeds were just perfect,” said Carrigan. “I love the golf course. It’s a shot-maker’s golf course. I love the fact that you’ve got to be aware of the elevation changes and it’s very similar to what I deal with at the Cutten Club. It was somewhat of an easy transition because elevation changes are similar between them.”
