Final Round Recap
KEVIN CARRIGAN WINS CANADIAN MEN’S MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
- Victoria, B.C. native earns exemption into 2013 RBC Canadian Open;
Woodbridge, Ont.’s Dave Bunker captures Mid-Master Division title -
Vancouver, B.C. (Golf Canada) – Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, B.C. carded a final-round 2-under par 70 to capture the 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Point Grey Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.
A product of the University of Texas at Arlington, Carrigan, the reigning B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur champion, finished at 3-under par 285 for the championship, besting three-time Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ont. by three strokes. Bunker posted a four-day tally of even-par 288 after carding a score of 1-under par 71 on Friday to earn runner-up honours.
“On the front-nine, I hit probably three clutch tee balls, and each of them found the fairway,” said Carrigan. “The idea is that you’ve got to keep your game plan the same until the last nine holes of a tournament, and that was the game plan all along. I got to the back-nine, gave one back on No. 11, but made a great eagle putt on No. 12. From there, it was just about controlling it and I found it.”
With the victory, Carrigan earned an exemption into the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont., an opportunity that he is already looking ahead to.
“Like any golfer that’s ever played the game, it’s a dream to play on the PGA TOUR. I know that I’m not playing on the PGA TOUR, but I’m playing in a PGA TOUR event,” said Carrigan. “I’m just smitten right now. I’m over the moon. This is a great way to cap off the summer.”
Defending Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Rob Couture of Trenton, Ont., now a resident of Dallas, Tex., finished T3 alongside Victoria, B.C.’s Craig Doell at 2-over par 290, while Tyler Frank of Saskatoon and Danny Lovell of Dallas, Tex. finished T5 at 3-over par 291.
Bunker, meanwhile, captured his sixth career Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship Mid-Master Division title, besting Doell by two strokes for the win.
Tom McKinlay Jr. of Lacombe, Alta. finished third at 9-over par 297, while Luc Guilbault of Drummondville, Que. was fourth at 13-over par 301.
John Bearrie of Arlington, Tex. rounded out the top-5 in the Mid-Master Division at 14-over par 302.

Round Three Recap
KEVIN CARRIGAN LEADS HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND AT CANADIAN MEN’S MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Vancouver, B.C. (Golf Canada) – Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, B.C. carded a third-round score of 3-over par 75 to lead the 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship through 54 holes of play at Point Grey Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.
Carrigan, who started the day atop the leaderboard with a five-stroke lead, posted six bogeys and three birdies during Thursday’s round to sit at 1-under par 215 for the championship, one shot ahead of defending Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Rob Couture of Trenton, Ont. Couture, now a resident of Dallas, Tex., shot 4-under par 68 on Thursday for a three-day tally of even-par 216.
“I wasn’t hitting it in play. I probably missed ten of the fourteen fairways, and it was a grind,” said Carrigan, the reigning B.C. Mid-Amateur champion. “I didn’t try to change my game plan because I believe in what I’m doing. I just couldn’t get it in play off the tee. Every time I was on a green in regulation, I had a really good chance for birdie, but I shot 75 with three birdies. That’s just too many mistakes.”
While Carrigan was disappointed in his performance, the University of Texas at Arlington product explained that his game plan will remain unchanged going forward.
“I like my game plan. I’m going to hit a lot of drivers tomorrow (Friday) and not get scared of anything,” said Carrigan. “The one thing about a one-shot lead is that it’s hardly a lead. The idea is not to think about it and just go out and play your game and see what happens.”
Three-time Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ont. is third at 1-over par 217, while Saskatoon’s Tyler Frank, the reigning Saskatchewan Amateur and Mid-Amateur champion, is fourth at 2-over par 218. Danny Lovell of Dallas, Tex. is fifth at 3-over par 219.
Bunker, meanwhile, holds a commanding six-stroke lead in the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship Mid-Master Division over Craig Doell of Victoria, B.C. Doell sits at 7-over par 223. Canadian Golf Hall of Fame Honoured Member Doug Roxburgh of Vancouver is third in the Mid-Master Division standings at 8-over par 224.
The 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship winner will earn an exemption into the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at the historic Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.
The 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship resumes Friday, September 7, 2012, with final-round play beginning at 7:30 a.m. (PDT).

Round Two Recap
KEVIN CARRIGAN HOLDS SECOND-ROUND LEAD AT CANADIAN MEN’S MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Team British Columbia captures Inter-Provincial Championship with five-stroke win;
Vancouver, B.C. (Golf Canada) – Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, B.C. carded a second-round score of 1-over par 73 to sit atop the leaderboard through 36 holes at the 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Point Grey Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.
Carrigan, the reigning B.C. Mid-Amateur champion, converted three birdies during Wednesday’s round, while also posting four bogeys to sit at 4-under par 140 for the championship. He leads three-time Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ont. and Danny Lovell of Dallas, Tex. by five strokes heading into third round play on Thursday. Bunker and Lovell are T2 at 1-over par 145.
“I kept it in play for the most part, but I struggled a little bit more off the tee today,” said Carrigan, who shot 5-under par 67 in round one. “I managed my misses and had a couple of sloppy swings. Other than that, I was happy to be at 73. My putter’s hot, so I’m looking forward to the next two rounds.”
Saskatoon’s Tyler Frank and Vancouver’s Chris Moore are T4 at 3-over par 147, while defending Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Rob Couture of Trenton, Ont., now a resident of Dallas, Tex., is T6 alongside Winnipeg’s Teale Merkeley at 4-over par 148.
The Team British Columbia contingent of Carrigan and Bryan Scott and Bryan Toth of Victoria captured the Inter-Provincial Team Championship title with a two-day tally of even-par 288, besting three-time defending R. Bruce Forbes Trophy winners, Team Ontario, by five strokes for the victory.
“You know what this means to the province, especially when it’s in your home province,” said Carrigan. “Nothing makes me prouder than wearing provincial colours, not to mention winning.”
The Team Ontario squad of Bunker, Drew Symons of Woodstock, Ont. and Rob Cowan of Waterloo, Ont., carded a combined 5-over par 293 during the 36-hole competition to earn runner-up honours.
Team Alberta and Team Saskatchewan placed third and fourth respectively, while Team Prince Edward Island and Team Quebec finished T5, 18 shots off the lead.
The Inter-Provincial Team Championship featured three-member teams competing in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play. The lowest two scores from rounds one and two counted towards the overall team total.
Bunker, meanwhile, sits atop the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship Mid-Master Division with a four-stroke advantage over Calgary’s Dale Goehring and Edmonton’s Brian Laubman, both of whom sit T2 at 5-over par 149.
A total of 74 players made the cut, which was set at 14-over par 158.
The 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship winner will earn an exemption into the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at the historic Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.

Round One Recap
KEVIN CARRIGAN HOLDS OPENING-ROUND LEAD AT CANADIAN MEN’S MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Team British Columbia takes seven-stroke lead into final round of Inter-Provincial play;
Vancouver, B.C. (Golf Canada) – Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, B.C. carded an opening-round score of 5-under par 67 to sit atop the leaderboard after round one of the 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Point Grey Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.
Carrigan, the reigning B.C. Mid-Amateur champion, posted six birdies on the day to go along with an eagle on Point Grey’s 18th hole, a par-5
“I started off incredibly nervous. I can’t remember being nervous on the first tee (No. 10) in like two years,” said Carrigan, a product of the University of Texas at Arlington. “I hit a hybrid about 60 yards left on the first hole, found it, made bogey. I bogeyed my second hole and birdied my third, then bogeyed my fourth and from there I just fell into my own. I couldn’t miss a fairway with my driver and as firm and fast as it was out here, it was just never stopping.”
Carrigan, who also placed fourth at the 2012 B.C. Amateur Championship earlier this year, pointed to his consistency off the tee as the key to a stellar opening-round score on Tuesday.
“I don’t think I missed a fairway with my driver,” said Carrigan. “I hit it pretty good, relatively long in comparison. I scored very well on the par-5s, even the ones where I made par. It was just the first day, so there was not a lot of pressure on it. It’s pretty effortless to go out there, especially when you’re hitting it good.”
Saskatoon’s Tyler Frank and Calgary’s Jordan Irwin sit T2 at even-par 72, while Chris Moore of Vancouver, Mark Elgner of Toronto, Allan Stanley of Windsor, Ont. and Bryan Scott of Victoria, B.C. are T4 at 1-over par 73.
Three-time Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ont. is T8 at 2-over par 74, while defending champion Rob Couture of Trenton, Ont., now a resident of Dallas, Tex., is T22 at 4-over par 76, nine shots off the lead.
In Inter-Provincial Team Championship play, the British Columbia contingent of Carrigan, Scott and Bryan Toth of Victoria, B.C. carded a combined 4-under par 140 to lead the Alberta squad of Irwin, David Schultz of Calgary and Tom McKinlay Jr. of Lacombe, Alta. by seven strokes heading into Wednesday’s final round of team competition. Alberta sits at 3-over par 147, while Team Saskatchewan, Team Ontario and Team Quebec are T3 at 7-over par 151.
Stanley, meanwhile, holds a one-stroke lead in the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship Mid-Master Division over Bunker and Victoria, B.C.’s Craig Doell.
The 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship resumes tomorrow, Wednesday, September 5, 2012, with second-round play beginning at 7:30 a.m. (PDT). Starting times, post-round results, a full field list and live scoring are available here.
At the conclusion of play on Wednesday, the field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties and Golf Canada will also crown the 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship Inter-Provincial Team Champion.
