Surrey sisters Michelle and Taylor Kim will play together in the final group for Round 3 of the British Columbia Amateur and Mid-Amateur Women’s Championship at Duncan Meadows Golf Course.

Michelle Kim shot her second straight even par round of 72, for a two-round total of (E) 144 and leads Taylor by three strokes after Taylor shot a (+1) round of 73 to go with her opening round (+2) 74 to stand at (+3) 147. The Kim sisters and Mary Parsons tee off at 9:50 a.m. Thursday.

“I had a bogey-bogey finish so it could have been even better,” said Michelle after her round. “I was very consistent early. I think I hit eight of the first nine greens and I was two-under at the turn. I played the back 9 thinking I wanted to make more birdies. It was a tough way to finish, but I’m happy to be leading.”

Big sister Taylor had a completely different story, as she didn’t have much going in her round until she made birdie-birdie on the final two holes to get into the final group with her younger sister.

“I’m really happy with my finish because I played so much better today, but I wasn’t taking advantage of the par 5's and I wasn’t scoring,” said Taylor. “I stayed patient and I made a couple of nice birdies to finish the round.”

While Taylor and Michelle have played many practice rounds together, they haven’t played much together competitively. In fact, while Taylor can’t remember playing her sister in such an environment, Michelle remembers one round where there was something at stake and it was big sister who prevailed.

But don’t think big sister is taking her sister lightly. “I think she’s playing really well and this is a course that she can score really well on,” said Taylor. “I know I’m always relaxed when we play together.”

There’s a four-way tie for third at (+4) 148 between Fraser Valley Zone 3’s Hannah Lee and Gloria Choi, Mayfair Lakes’ Mary Parsons and Point Grey’s Marie Donnici.

Donnici is perhaps the most surprising name in this group, as the University of Hawaii sophomore had a (+1) round of 73 to go with her opening round (+3) 75.

“I feel like I’m right there,” said Donnici. “I had a lot of birdie chances and I have to stay patient and take advantage of those opportunities when they come up. . . . I’ve had a bit of a dry spell in amateur events, but I’m hoping my luck will change.”

MID-AMATEUR COMPETITION

In the Mid-Amateur competition, which will conclude after Round 3 on Thursday, defending champion Christina Spence Proteau of Port Alberni is tied with another former Mid-Amateur champion, Bree Sharratt of Bear Mountain in Victoria, at (+6) 150. “It could have been so much better,” Proteau told playing partner Taylor Kim after her round. “This is only my 14th round of golf this year, and I’ve played 4 tournaments, so I’m just trying to score as best as I can.”

Sharratt had the makings of a great round after canning a 60-foot birdie putt on the 2nd hole. Sitting at even par and on the 18th green in regulation, Sharratt had a disastrous four-putt to finish her day.

“It’s a tough way to finish, but I’m happy with where I am,” said Sharratt. “I know how good Christina is so I’m in a good spot, so I’ll just come out tomorrow and try to play my best and try not to four-putt.”

Newly crowned British Columbia Senior Women’s champion Jackie Little is third, four strokes behind Sharratt and Proteau.

BEST BALL COMPETITION

The team of Taylor and Michelle Kim jumped to the top of this competition, as their (-10) score is two clear of the (-8) score of Jamie Huo from Uplands Golf Club and Dorsey Addicks from Big Sky Golf; and Jayla Kang and Gloria Choi of Fraser Valley Zone 3.

ZONE COMPETITION

In the 36-hole Zone Competition, the Zone 5 team of Alison Murdoch and Bree Sharratt finished first at (+20) 308, two strokes ahead of the runner-up Zone 6 team of Shelly Stouffer and Jackie Little.
