New British Columbia Women’s Amateur Champion Michelle Kim highlights the field of 52 competitors at the Junior Girls Championship set for July 7-10 at Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria.

Kim, 17, outlasted older sister Taylor Kim at Duncan Meadows last week to win the most prestigious amateur provincial title in women’s golf and she’ll be looking to add to the hardware she’s taking back to her Surrey home.

The Team Canada Development Squad member who starts her opening round Tuesday at 12:36 p.m. with Euna Han and Avril Lee, will face challenges from the two girls who finished T3 at Duncan Meadows.

Fellow Team Canada member Alisha Lau will tee off at 11:42 a.m. alongside good friends Hannah Lee and Shirin Anjarwalla and fellow Team BC teammates for the Western Canada Summer Games in Wood Buffalo next month.

Gloria Usu Choi, who nipped Lau in a two-hole playoff for the final BC spot at the Canadian Women’s Amateur in Saskatoon later this month, is out at 11:24 a.m. alongside Natalie Chu and Mirai Hayashi.

Last year’s defending BC Junior Girls Champion, Team Canada Development Squad member Naomi Ko of Royal Colwood, is not in the field at Cordova Bay, as she is playing in the Ontario Women’s Amateur at St. Thomas Golf & Country Club in Union, ON prior to playing the Women’s North & South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst next week.

The BC Junior Girls' Championship is open to female players 18 years of age and younger as of August 1. The competition is a 72-hole stroke play, with a cut after 54 holes.

There are also two other titles to be contested at Cordova Bay. The Zone Team Gross competition features two-person teams selected by each zone in advance of the competition. Scoring is based on the players’ combined two-day scores during the first two days of competition.

The Best-Ball Competition sees players making up their own two-person teams from the field. This championship is a best ball conducted over 72 holes.

Cordova Bay is one of the most beloved golf courses in Victoria and offers a relaxed atmosphere, stunning course conditions and spectacular views. The grass is short in the places it should be and long in others.

The trees are beautiful to look at and challenging to hit from. Mt. Baker rises imperiously from the horizon, daring you to match its perfection with every shot you hit.

As a certified Audubon Sanctuary (the first on Vancouver Island) Cordova Bay offers wildlife almost as beautiful as the gardens kept by their award-winning grounds crew.

For the BC Junior Girls, Cordova Bay will play to just under 5,900 yards on a challenging par-73 track, with an expected pace of play of 4 hours and 35 minutes.
