PGA Of BC Names 2015 Scholarship And Bursary Recipients

RICHMOND, BC (PGA of BC) - The PGA of BC is proud to announce the recipients of both the 2015 Forestar Golf Community Leadership Bursary, as well as the Jim Gibson Scholarship.

This recognition program is designed to honour individuals in the golf community that exhibit qualities such as volunteerism, selflessness, passion, and dedication to the game.

The Forestar Golf Community Leadership Bursary recognizes an individual who demonstrates an extraordinary desire and passion to to use their abilities to make a difference in the lives of others, setting an example of "giving back" with which all PGA of BC members are proud to be associated.

This year, we are pleased to award this bursary to Jesse Crowe, Head Professional at Salmon Arm Golf Club. In his position at Salmon Arm GC, Crowe has made a concentrated effort to grow the junior program at the club, and has seen tremendous results from doing so.

His community-minded approach to growing junior golf has seen Crowe connect with other minor sports associations in Salmon Arm, including soccer and hockey, to introduce as many youth to golf as possible.

He has also gained the support from local businesses, and makes a conscience effort to ensure the junior golf program is promoted along all avenues. With this bursary, Crowe plans to use the funds to further promote programs using local media outlets, in addition to jump starting Salmon Arm's Golf in Schools program and covering some of the costs associated with junior players entering and travelling to tournaments in 2016.

The Jim Gibson Scholarship is named in honour of the late Jim Gibson, a long-time supporter of the PGA of BC who valued education in his role as a golf professional, and was extremely well versed in the game. The recipient of this scholarship exemplifies volunteerism and demonstrates a passion for furthering their education for their community's benefit.

The PGA of BC is proud to award the 2015 scholarship to Derek Whipple, Candidate for Membership at Greenacres Golf Club. Whipple is a proud supporter of local charities, connecting with the Make-a-Wish Foundation's annual charity golf classic, and participating in the PGA of BC's Golfathon for ALS campaign since 2013, a cause for which he has raised over $3,100.

Whipple hopes to one day complete his Master's in golf, while also supporting other budding CFM's in their careers. As a stepping stone in achieving these goals, Whipple plans to use this scholarship to assist him in completing more PGA of Canada learning modules, as well as beginning teaching and coaching training in the spring.

We congratulate the above on their achievements, and look forward to recognizing them, along with other awards recipients, at the PGA of BC Awards Celebration next week. The event will take place October 14 at the River Rock Casino Resort.
