• I've Played Over 1,000 Courses And These Are My Favourite 10

The Spectacular Course At Thracian Cliffs On The Black Sea Is An All-Time Favourite - (Image credit: Thracian Cliffs)

    - Golf Monthly contributing editor Rob Smith selects ten of his all-time favourite golf courses from all over the world -

Having played my first round of golf while still a student, I have now enjoyed playing a very full and vibrant rainbow of courses in almost 50 countries. My tally currently stands at 1,176, but unless you are reading this very soon after publication, it will hopefully now be higher.

Being asked to select my favourite 10 is a challenging task, but after a great deal of thought, this is how it currently stands. I was keen to split the selection geographically, and happily it worked out neatly with 6 in the UK&I - hardly surprising as that is where I live - and four dotted around the world.

There is no implied ranking here, this is simply an alphabetic list. With each, I have tried to sum up why the course means so much to me.

  • Les Bordes Takes Its Place On World Golf Stage

SAINT-LAURENT-NOUAN, France -- The fact they are called the Old Course and the New Course and are located in France, not Scotland, could be considered chutzpah of the highest order.

But no offence was intended to the home of golf in St. Andrews when Les Bordes Golf Club placed those monikers on its two layouts. It just made sense in a simple but elegant sort of way.

Its Old Course, which opened in 1986, is a Robert von Hagge design that has long been regarded as one of continental Europe’s finest tracks. Its New Course is really new, opening this past summer and designed by highly regarded American architect Gil Hanse.

As a passionate golfer I have made the heralded pilgrimages to Scotland and Ireland. They are 'must visit' destinations that expose you to some of the world’s greatest courses, but what next?

After you have walked over the Swilcan Bridge at St. Andrews and hit your approach shot on the 9th hole at Royal County Down, then where do you go?

    I say Spain.

  • Why I Start Every Day In St. Andrews

My morning webcam visits to the Old Course connect me to the game and fuel my imagination with the possibilities of the day.

Rain or shine, every morning after breakfast I head straight for the first tee of the Old Course in St. Andrews.

Well, not in person. But I almost feel like I’m there thanks to the spectacularly clear and versatile webcam operated by the St. Andrews Links Trust.
