Accomplished Junior Golfer Joins Pioneers’ Talent-Laden Freshman Class

DENVER – University of Denver men’s golf coach Erik Billinger announced today Roy Kang (North Vancouver, B.C.) has signed a national letter of intent to join the program for the 2016-17 academic year. Kang joins a talent-laden freshman class for DU that includes Isaac Petersilie (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Troy Dangler (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Eric Hagen (Aberdeen, Wash.).

“Roy is a very talented player and we’re thrilled that he’ll be joining our program for the upcoming season,” says Billinger.

“His all-around game is top-notch and he’s shown throughout his junior career that he has the ability to produce low scores under various conditions at an eclectic array of courses. We feel that our incoming freshman class is of an exceptional caliber and we’re looking forward to having all four student-athletes play a prominent role in the program in the coming years.”

The runner-up at last summer’s Pacific Northwest Junior Boys’ Amateur, Kang earned Top 5 finishes at both the Junior America’s Cup and Canadian Junior Golf Association’s B.C. Junior Open in 2015 and won the CJGA Western Canadian Junior Championship last March by eight strokes. He earned a Top 10 finish at the B.C. Amateur Championship in 2014 and won the B.C. Bantam Championship in 2013, earning national recognition from Cleveland Golf in the process.

Currently ranked No. 2 in his age group in his home province of British Columbia, Kang’s home course is the award-winning Seymour Golf & Country Club on Vancouver’s Lower Mainland. The 18-year-old will compete at several events this summer prior to commencing his collegiate career in the fall.

Denver’s current roster consists of seniors Adam Ruben (Lake Oswego, Ore.) & Arti Edelman (Geneva, Switzerland), junior Petter Mikalsen (Stavanger, Norway) and sophomores Chris Korte (Littleton, Colo.), Jake Kelley (Littleton, Colo.), Michael Boylan (Patterson, N.Y.) and Johan Werge (San Luis Potosi, Mexico). The Pioneers’ next tournament will be the 2016 Summit League Championship, set to be staged at Newton, Kansas’ Sand Creek Station from May 1-3. Currently ranked third in the league in team scoring average, Denver is coming off of an 11th-place finish at the 2016 Hawkeye Invitational.
