Uplands Golf Club proved to be a rather inhospitable host during Monday’s first round of the B.C. Senior Men’s Amateur Championship.

The venerable Victoria layout’s tight, tree-lined fairways and lightning-fast greens proved to be a considerable challenge to the 156-man field. No one broke par in the opening round of the 54-hole event.
Pemberton’s Lance Lundy emerged as the leader after firing an even-par 70 that included three birdies and three bogeys.

Lundy, who plays out of Big Sky Golf Club, has a one-shot lead on six players — two-time Senior champion John Gallacher of Burnaby, 2012 champion Sandy Harper of Nanaimo, Neil Oleary of Victoria, Stewart Scott of Kelowna, Don Brown of West Kelowna and Earl MacPherson of Surrey.

The B.C. Senior is open to players aged 55 and older as of Sept. 6 of 2022. A Super-Senior Championship for players aged 65 and above as of Sept. 6 is also being contested at Uplands.

Lundy, who won the 2020 Super-Senior Championship at Sunshine Coast Golf Club, also leads that championship.

Five-time B.C. Senior champion Doug Roxburgh of Vancouver was among many who struggled in Monday’s opening round. Roxburgh opened with a seven-over 77.

Kelowna’s Norm Bradley, the 2020 champion who lost in a playoff last year, opened with a two-over 72. Michael Kennedy of North Vancouver, who won last year’s title at Bootleg Gap in Kimberley, was a late withdrawal and is not defending his title.
