By Brad Ziemer, British Columbia Golf

British Columbia is once again well represented on Golf Canada’s revamped national teams that were recently announced for 2023. A total of 57 players were named to the new Golf Canada squads and 17 of them are British Columbians.

Golf Canada has changed the structure of its teams this year. The Team Canada tier (formerly the Young Pro Squad and Amateur Squad) now includes both amateurs and professionals. Feeding into Team Canada is a new tier called Team Canada - NextGen (formerly the Junior Squad) that now includes players aged 20 and under.

British Columbians on the Team Canada men’s squad include A.J. Ewart of Coquitlam, Chris Crisologo of Richmond, Henry Lee of Coquitlam, Jared du Toit of Kimberley, Jeevan Sihota of Victoria and Stuart Macdonald of Vancouver. Angela Arora of Surrey, Lauren Kim of Surrey, Leah John of Vancouver and Michelle Liu of Vancouver are on the women’s team.

British Columbians on the Team Canada-NextGen squads include Alex Zhang of Richmond, Cooper Humphreys of Vernon, Gavyn Knight of Parksville, Luna Lu of Burnaby, Martina Yu of Coquitlam, Vanessa Zhang of Vancouver and Yeji Kwon of Port Coquitlam.

Golf Canada has also created a new national talent identification system aimed at growing the pool of future national team prospects and has set an ambitious goal of having 30 Canadians on the LPGA and PGA Tours by 2032.
