By day, Kevin Carrigan is a mild-mannered full-time financial planner with Investors Group in Victoria.

But get him out on the golf course and he’s the sixth-ranked amateur in Canada and 334th in the world, according to Golf Canada’s most recent amateur rankings.

Carrigan is different from most of the amateurs on this list because while many of them are younger and playing college golf, Carrigan has to fit his competitive golf in between business meetings and obligations.

Not bad for the Royal Colwood club champion who has to use most of his vacation time to play in worldwide golf tournaments.

Two Interior golfers are on Golf Canada’s radar after cracking their most recent Top 10 rankings for amateur golfers in the country.

Kimberley’s Jared du Toit, currently attending school at the University of Idaho, is the fifth-ranked male amateur in Canada and 332nd in the world, while Kelowna’s Megan Osland, currently at San Jose State University, is 10th in Canada and 227th in the world.  

Both du Toit and Osland have carded wins in the first part of their golf seasons, with both now currently on winter break.

It’s somehow appropriate that two young women who went to the same high school (Gleneagle Secondary in Coquitlam), learned the game at the same course (Swan-E-Set Bay Resort) and now attend the same university (U of Washington), are separated by only three spots in Golf Canada’s most recent Top 10 rating of top female amateurs.

Washington Husky seniors SooBin Kim, ranked third in Canada and 38th in the world, and Jennifer Yang, sixth in Canada and 117th in the world, are the next wave of Canadian golfers set to make their mark in the world of golf.

Tristan Mandur recognized his own golf ability from an early age.

“I’d say around six or seven, that’s when I did my first tournament and I had a lot of fun and I really wanted to pursue it,’’ he said.

Currently in Grade 10 at Shawnigan Lake School, Mandur became a household name in golf this year for those who hadn’t heard of him already.

Maureen was competitive in five sports - badminton, swimming (syncronized), tennis, field hockey and golf.
 Her athletic career started with her involvement in sport while a student at UBC.  There, she
competed in badminton, field hockey and swimming and won an unprecedented nine Big Blocks
(four badminton, four swimming and one field hockey), a record that held for several years.

After 16 hours of High Performance Camp for the province’s best junior golfers, I learned that while golf is hard, getting better at golf isn’t quite as difficult. Many of the lessons coaches Matt Palsenbarg, Jody Jackson, Helene Delisle and Matt Cella, along with trainers Nick Mueller and Lindsay Manion, had can be used by golfers of all abilities.

And while you may not get to the championship level of an Alisha Lau, Shirin Anjarwalla, or Keaton Gudz, you can improve your game with these tips from the experts.

Blair Armitage, Golf Canada

I recently spent a terrific day with three-time World Champion and Olympic silver medalist Patrick Chan.

Patrick had signed on as a spokesperson for a Vancouver development company and they wanted to film a television commercial featuring Patrick playing golf. I was asked to search out the ideal golf course for the shoot. Naturally I choose the Quilchena Golf & Country Club in Richmond, BC. (I was the General Manager at Quilchena for seven years prior to joining Golf Canada.)

August 22, 2014 - (British Columbia Golf)

Euna Han came from behind to win the 2014 B.C. Girls’ Bantam Championship at Meadowlands Golf Club, while Andrew Spalti held on to win the 2014 B.C. Boys’ Bantam Championship after leading both days of competition.

Han shot a 2-under 68 on the second day to take the lead from her position in third place following the first round, and finishied with a two-day total of 138 (-2) as the only female competitor under par.

By all measurements, 15-year-old Richmond golfer Alisha Lau has had a 2014 golf season to remember.

Lau finished T5 at the BC Junior Girl's Championship in early July and just a week later, finished third at the BC Women's Amateur.

Bad weather forced the cancellation of the third and final round of the 2014 PING CCAA Golf National Championships at the Club de Golf Lorette in Quebec on Friday morning.

That meant the leaders after the second round were declared champions and Camosun Chargers student Jarred Callbeck won the men’s title. Callbeck shot a (-2) round of 70 in his second round Thursday to beat Hugo Bernard of Andre-Laurendeau by one stroke. Grant Maskiewich from Camosun finished in a tie for fourth.

July 4, 2014 - (British Columbia Golf)

Naomi Ko won the 2014 British Columbia Golf Junior Girls’ Championship title at The Dunes at Kamloops with a 6-under par 286 after four days of competitive play.

The Team Canada member shot even par on the par-73 5,886-yard course on the final day of the Championship on her way to winning the title.

 “I felt pretty good going into the round, I started off with a bogey so I knew I had to make a couple birdies to get where I needed to,” said Ko.

July 11, 2014 - (British Columbia Golf)

Taylor Kim finished at 10-under to win the title at the 111th British Columbia Golf Women’s Amateur at Kamloops Golf and Country Club.

Kim shot (-2) on Friday to finish out a week of exceptional play, winning her first title at a British Columbia Golf Championship. The Team Canada member was already 2-under at the turn and her only bogey on number 15 proved to be nothing more than a slight speed bump on her way to the title.

June 19, 2014 - (British Columbia Golf)

Jackie Little won her fourth British Columbia Golf Senior Women’s Championship in addition to placing first in the Mid-Master Championship at Vernon Golf and Country Club in the 40th year of the Senior Women’s competition as players competed for the Lucy Markham Trophy.

Holly Horwood took home top honours in the Super-Senior Championship.

Little closed out the championships shooting (78-73-78) for a final of (+7) on the 5,919-yard par-74 course to record a comfortable six shot victory.

John Marchesan, Globe and Mail (Golf Canada)

Adam Svensson climbed six spots into the top 50 in the world amateur rankings following his latest victory. The Surrey, B.C. golfer wasted little time in adding to his collegiate win total by taking the Guy Harvey Invitational, the first event of the fall season for Barry University, the No. 1 ranked team in Division II. Svensson’s 9-under total tied a tournament record and his second round 64 was the second-best total of his career. The win, which moved him up to No. 46 in the world, was his eighth career collegiate title.

Eight British Columbia amateur golfers have been nominated for prestigious Pacific Northwest Golf Association Awards.

The PNGA gives out awards in eight categories: Men's, Women's, Mid-Amateur Men's, Mid-Amateur Women's, Senior Men's, Senior Women's, Junior Boys', and Junior Girls'.

The players are voted on by the PNGA Championship Committee and the nominated players come from British Columbia, Idaho, Washington State and Oregon.

 June 6, 2014 - (British Columbia Golf) PEMBERTON, B.C. – Craig Doell defeated Patrick Weeks on the first hole of a playoff to win the 29th British Columbia Golf Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Big Sky Golf Club.

Doell’s double-bogey on the 17th combined with a birdie by Weeks on 18, left the two competitors tied at 1-under for the tournament, forcing a sudden death playoff starting on 17 and then playing 18 until a conclusion.

July 24, 2014 - (British Columbia Golf) Doug Roxburgh added to his collection of titles with a second consecutive win at the 2014 British Columbia Golf Men’s Senior Championship finishing 5-under par at Christina Lake Golf Club, while Gudmund Lindbjerg took home top honours in the Super-Senior Championship after a two-hole playoff victory, finishing at 1-under par.

Midway through the final round of competition it appeared that the defending champion had all but secured a victory. He began the day with a 1-stroke advantage and two birdies over the first nine holes had him four shots ahead of the nearest competitor.

Following the turn, however, Roxburgh ran into some trouble getting out of the left-hand greenside bunker on number 10 and double-bogeyed for the first time in the Championship.

July 18, 2014 - (British Columbia Golf) After a thrilling five-hole play off, Jordan Lu won the 112th British Columbia Amateur Championship presented by Blue Shore Financial at Seymour Golf and Country Club.

Lu birdied the final hole of regulation play; a 558-yard par 5, to finish Even (284) for the Championship tied with Michael Belle, and forced a sudden-death playoff to determine the 2014 champion.
